Sleep is an important function of the human body. According to content posted on the American National Sleep Foundation’s website, under the title of “What Happens When You Sleep”, sleep has an overall impact on “how we look, feel and perform on a daily basis.” Skimping on sleep means the body does not have ample time for muscle repair, memory consolidation and the secretion of hormones that regulate growth and appetite. It goes without saying that sleep deprivation can have an adverse effect on overall wellbeing. Therefore, when exam time is looming, with fast food, possibly lack of exercise and sleepless nights being the order of the day, there is probably no time to reenergize. “Teens need at least 8? hours – and on average 9? hours – a night of uninterrupted sleep to leave their bodies and minds rejuvenated for the next day,” states the National Sleep Foundation, in “What Happens When You Sleep.” Here are ways to avoid exam stress, while getting enough sleep for a healthier happier student life. Why is Sleeping Important? In an Associated Press article by Malcolm Ritter titled “Researchers Study How to Keep Brain Awake,” published on February 22, 2004, it is stated that “sleep deprivation leads to reduced productivity, poor performance in school or the workplace." Furthermore, it could result in medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, depression and reduced resistance to viruses, says Ritter in the article cited above. In the book called The Biological Basis for Mind Body Interactions, authored by E. A. Mayer, Clifford B. Saper [Elsevier Science & Technology, 2000], problems associated with sleep deficit are demonstrated as follows: “…students exposed to exam stress [also] show blunted immune responses, decreased antibody formation to Hepatitis B vaccination and enhanced susceptibility and severity of viral infection such as the common cold.” Ritter in the Associated Press article mentioned above, comments that malfunctions can be expected if the brain is running on too little sleep, especially in a situation where alertness is critical such as driving. In the same article Edward Stepanski of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago states that: “Driving is the worst kind of thing, you're forced to sit still, so you can't move around and do things people ordinarily do to keep awake.” Studying requires more or less the same level of concentration and discipline as driving, thus, the importance of sleep for studies cannot be over emphasized. Exam Practice Made Easy Coffee is one of the most common tricks students use to stay awake during exam time. It probably does more harm than good. “I hate to say it, but most of the population is using caffeine the wrong way," says James Wyatt, PhD. This was in a news release by Chris Martin and John Pontarelli called Small, Frequent Doses of Caffeine Best Strategy for Staying Awake,” published on May 11, 2004. According to Academictips.org, a website dedicated to time management and effective studying techniques, the following strategies for effective studying are mentioned: effective management of time, establishment of study groups, setting a comfortable pace, and an early review of class notes. Academictips.org recommends setting aside two to three hours daily for studying. This is a sound study plan that leaves time for classes, meals and sleeping, plus other outside activities. Moreover, they recommend establishing study groups which offer social support structures, as colleagues or classmates can encourage each other. This can also serve as a reasonable time to mix studying with social activities. Other study techniques include making a study schedule to ensure that study hours are maximized and reviewing class notes. 80% of the work could be forgotten, if it’s not immediately reviewed, adds Academictips.org.
